I was literally laying in my bed last night browsing Reddit on my cell phone when the clock stuck midnight. I was surrounded by my two boys and exhausted wife who were all sound asleep. I leaned over and kissed my wife, congratulating her on yet another year of successful marriage. The last year proved to be a challenging yet rewarding one. The rigors of working full time, raising four kids, and paramedic school were insane to say the least. However, with the New Year comes some new goals, both personal and professional.
On the personal level I want to get back in shape. Over the last ten years I’ve slowly added weight. While in paramedic school I was holding steady with a slight drop towards the end. As soon as I hit the passenger side of the ambulance my body mass index as starting creeping up.
Professionally, I’m planning to start keeping track of one subject per shift to research and learn about. It could be something small from a new medication to a new disease profile. It’s important to remember that within the profession we’ve chosen there’s an ever-changing evolution of best practice. Continued education is extremely important. I plan on sharing some of the material I review from time to time. Stay safe out there and I wish all of you a healthy and prosperous new year.
