After graduating paramedic school the first job I applied for was an entry level paramedic position that would transition to firefighter paramedic within one year. As you would imagine the stack of applications was tall and my expeirance as a first responder was limited. In the end I didn’t get the job, but I was put on the waiting list for the next round of hiring the department conducted.
I was always “that guy”. Calling firefighters “hose pullers” and “knuckle draggers”. Things changed when I rode along as a paramedic student with the local fire department. The brotherhood and comradery I experienced was amazing. The firefighter paramedics on the ladder were extremely knowledgeable and the whole experience changed the way I felt about the fire department. At this moment in time, I knew if the opportunity presented itself I’d give it a shot.
After being placed on the wait list I ended up getting hired on with a private ambulance company. As I waited for a call back I figured gaining experience in the field would be a great addition to the resume. Bingo! Last week I received the call. They’re offering me the position. My journey to the dark side has begun.
As things progress I plan to keep posting updates on the process of becoming a firefighter paramedic. Stay tuned.
